Search engine giants Google and Yahoo have received criticism for logging users' IP address and other private information. The new Ixquick search engine change the game.

It is no secret that search engines including Yahoo, Google, and MSN regularly log the private information of each user including IP address and time of search. However, a new search engine has launched that promises “totally anonymous web searching:” Ixquick.com.

The Problem of Data Privacy

Privacy concerns with Yahoo, Google, MSN, and other search engines have come to the fore in the mainstream news media. But what may also surprise the web user is the fact that these search engines also register additional private information including IP address, search terms, and the time of search.

In theory, this information could be used to not only track search activity but also to locate the household from which the search originated.

What Makes Ixquick Search Engine Different?

While some would discount the privacy issue as low-risk, others disagree. But for those who would like peace of mind while performing a search, the Ixquick search engine offers a host of advantages designed to protect the privacy of people searching for information on the web:

  • no logging of IP address or time of search
  • no logging of search terms or websites visited
  • secure https protocol over SSL to prevent snooping on searchers
  • proxy service for visiting websites in full anonymity

However, these are just some of the benefits of using Ixquick.

Other Benefits of Using Ixquick Search Engine

Ixquick is a very attractive, simple to use search engine that rivals Google in terms of appearance and functionality. The cool blue look of the website and well-designed graphics are more attractive and interesting than Google, Metacrawler, or Alltheweb.com.

The user can add Ixquick to his or her browser or search the web; anonymously perform a search for people or a business in the international phone directory; search across the web for video; or search for pictures.

The Ixquick search engine features proprietary search across a dozen major search engines including Yahoo, MSN, Lycos, Wikipedia, All the Web, Gigablast, Qkport, Ask/Teoma, EntireWeb, Winzy, Exalead, and Open Directory.

Customizing the Ixquick Search Engine Interface

Customizing the Ixquick search engine interface is easy. The user can

  • change theme by clicking the tiny hanging light bulb in the upper right corner of the home page
  • adjust settings by clicking my settings from the home page or any search results page
  • add Ixquick search to browser
  • download Ixquick search toolbar for Windows, Mac, or Linux
  • embed an Ixquick search box in a blog or website
  • set Ixquick as the home page

According to Ixquick, a Dutch company owned by Surfboard Holding BV, the new website is “the world’s most private search engine” whose privacy efforts have been certified by an independent third party. It has also been awarded the European Privacy Seal for its high privacy standards.
