While Mac OS X antivirus software is readily available, the debate continues as to whether or not virus protection programs are beneficial for most Apple computer users.

For many years, Mac computer users have not felt obligated to purchase antivirus software.

There are many reasons for this including the fact that Apple computers have traditionally held significantly less of the personal computer market share as opposed to Windows-based systems. Consequently, Mac computers are know as being far from the best targets for creators of computer viruses and malware.

Debating Macintosh Virus Protection

However, over the past few years Mac computers have become increased in popularity worldwide. This fact, coupled with enhanced security on newer Windows machines, has made the Mac OS X platform a more attractive target for architects of malicious software.

As a result, more Mac antivirus programs have surfaced to appease the rising security needs of Mac users. But are these needs justified or are they merely a product of hype?

Benefits of Running Mac Antivirus Software

Proponents of Mac antivirus programs will argue that although there are not many Mac-specific viruses, it is best to prepare for that possibility by installing and using antivirus software. While this software may not be necessary for all users, there are definitely advantages to using it.

For example, a Mac antivirus program is a must for users engaging in high-risk internet activities such as online gambling or illegal file sharing. Even Mac users who frequently download and install applications from social networking websites should consider running an antivirus program to protect against potential malware or spyware attachments.

Perhaps the most undeniable benefit of Mac antivirus software is its ability to prevent the transmission of viruses and malware to Windows users. Similarly, Mac users running Windows on a Mac via Boot Camp should install Windows antivirus software because Mac antivirus utilities will do nothing to protect the Windows partition.

Drawbacks of Antivirus Software on Mac OS X Computers

Because Mac-specific viruses are uncommon, many Mac users are skeptical about the need for dedicated virus protection software beyond the utilities and tools built into Mac OS X. Furthermore there are numerous cases where installing and using Mac antivirus software has spawned larger problems including security breaches and data loss.

Another major drawback to Mac antivirus software is that it is not 100% effective. Mac antivirus programs can potentially stop an infection but only if the virus definitions for the malware have been updated. In other words, if a serious Mac virus materializes, then the Mac antivirus software will be useless until it has been updated to detect and eliminate the new virus.

Moreover, many Mac antivirus programs are inherently intrusive which can lead to decreased overall system performance whenever the software scans for viruses.

Should Mac Users Invest in Antivirus Software?

For many Mac users, implementation of some simple precautions and practices can increase system security and thus negate the need for antivirus software. However, users who feel that these protective steps are not adequate will feel at ease with an antivirus program and should research the various Mac antivirus programs to find the one best suited to the individual user’s needs.
