How to Use Internet Explorer's Content AdvisorUsing IE to Police the Content Kids are Exposed to Online
This step-by-step tutorial provides instruction on using Internet Explorer's Content Advisor to control user's access to web content.
The Internet Explorer Content Advisor, enables users to rate web content based on its appropriateness, as well as control the websites that users can visit. The Content Advisor monitors all Internet activity. If a user goes to a restricted page, a warning will be issued and the Content Advisor will then prompt for a password. The user will not be able to proceed without the password. The Need for the IE Content AdvisorBecause the World Wide Web still lacks any broadly effective means for policing content, a lot of the information found on the Internet may be offensive. Increasingly, parents, guardians and educators alike are expressing their concern regarding the potentially corrupting material that children are increasingly being exposed to. One effective solution they can use is Internet Explorer’s Content Advisor. RSACi and IRCA Rating Systems The Internet Explorer Content Advisor uses two content-rating systems, which are administered by independent rating organizations: *The RSACi system (Recreational Software Advisory Council on the Internet) *The IRCA system (Internet Content Rating Association) How to Use Internet Explorer's Content AdvisorSection #1Enable the IE Content Advisor Feature *Open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools and then select Internet Options from the dropdown menu. *Click on the Content tab. *Click Enable under the section labeled Content Advisor. This opens the Content Advisor dialog box *Click on the Ratings tab. You can now adjust the settings of different options in their respective categories. *Adjust the slider bar to your desired level for each of the categories of objectionable content. *Click OK once you are done setting limits for specific categories. Section #2 Specify Website Access*In the Content Advisor dialog box, click on the Approved Sites tab. *Type in the web address that you would like to allow or block, ino the Allow this web site text box. =>> Click on the Always button if you want to allow the Web site to be viewed =>> Click on the Never button if you want to block access to the site This creates an entry for the website in the List of approved and disapproved web sites box. You can remove a website from this list by clicking on it in the List of approved and disapproved web sites box, then clicking on Remove Section #3Create a Supervisor Password *In the Content Advisor dialog box, click on the General tab. *Click on Create Password under Supervisor password. *Type a password into both of the Password and the Confirm password boxes. *Enter a hint into the Enter a hint for your new password box. This will come in handy if you forget your password later.
